Recovery Phrase Storage

Plan where and how to store a recovery phrase. Review how recovery phrases work and what a lost wallet backup can affect before setup.

Troubleshooting Checks

  • If you cannot find the phrase, check only places where you intentionally stored it. Do not enter partial words into recovery websites or pay anyone who claims they can identify the missing phrase.
  • If a backup may be exposed, create a new wallet on a trusted device and move funds after confirming the new recovery phrase is stored safely.
  • If a passphrase or extra word was used, the seed alone may restore a different empty wallet. Document passphrase policy separately without placing it directly beside the seed.

Safety And Scam Prevention

  • Avoid photos, cloud documents, email drafts, password managers, and chat apps for seed storage. Account compromise can become wallet compromise.
  • Separate recovery phrase storage from device PINs, exchange passwords, and wallet labels that reveal asset value.
  • Use tamper-evident storage habits where possible: sealed envelopes, controlled access, periodic checks, and clear instructions for trusted recovery scenarios.

Practical Setup Notes

  • Choose storage based on threats: fire, water, theft, forgetfulness, heirs, travel, and shared housing all change the best plan.
  • A single backup is simple but fragile. Multiple backups improve availability but increase exposure, so each location needs a reason.
  • For meaningful balances, compare metal backups and inheritance notes. The goal is recovery by the right person, not discovery by anyone else.
